Keep your windscreen clean
It’s beneficial to keep your windscreen clean. Road grime, dirt, dust and debris like tree leaves or sap and bird droppings can lead to your wiper blades smearing as well as wearing more quickly. If your wiper blades screech or smear this is a clear indication the windscreen needs to be cleaned as soon as possible.
We recommend using a separate set of clean microfibre cloths for cleaning your windscreen. Never use a cloth that has been used on the rest of the vehicle.
Use a windscreen washer additive
It’s a good idea to use a windscreen washer additive which will lubricate the windscreen when using the wiper blades. This will help extend the life of the blades by reducing friction and thereby wear and tear.
Don’t use your wipers on a dry windscreen
Only use your wiper blades when the windscreen is wet. We recommend spraying a generous amount of water/washer fluid before using the wipers. Using your wipers on a dry surface can cause the wipers to wear out much more quickly than normal, and can even lead to a damaged windscreen.
Be aware of the environment
Our rubber blades are UV-stabilised, but prolonged UV exposure (particularly in New Zealand where the UV rating is high) will still damage the blades over time.
In freezing temperatures, to prevent the wiper blade rubber sticking to the windscreen, pull the wiper blades away from the windscreen the night before a freeze. The next morning run your car’s defroster first and scrape away any snow or ice, if necessary.
If your car is garaged, your wiper blades won’t be as exposed to environmental impacts and will last longer.
Regularly inspect the blades
Regularly inspect your wiper blades to ensure they are in good condition. As they begin to wear there are a few signs to look out for when using your wipers:
- Smearing or streaking on the windscreen
- Squeaking or screeching sounds when the windscreen is wet
- Shuddering or juddering motion
- Small cracks in the rubber
Firstly, check the wiper blades and windscreen are clean and free of debris. If the problem persists it is time to change the blades.
How to know when it’s time to replace the blades
It is generally recommended to change your wiper blades every 6 to 12 months for optimal performance and driving safety. Regularly inspect the blades to ensure they are in good condition. As they begin to wear there are a few signs to look out for:
